I entered the gallery at the Yale School of Art to find an exhibition of the strange, the wonderous, and yes, the freakish.

The exhibit, curated by Lisa Kereszi, featured contemporary art inspired by “side show” themes and critical issues surrounding the imagery, to authentic side show signage, such as this giant piece:IMG_0101

It’s interesting to observe the way the side show performers are advertised as strange, but also conforming to a generic sexual aesthetic.

Some pieces were more in line with the travelling circus motif, and this piece in particular was a beautiful and skillful piece of art:


I mean, this picture is of musicians, but there’s something strange and intriguing about it. Maybe that’s the real side show appeal–the familiar clothed in imagination.
